Islington Book Club

Islington Book Club

Founded 2008
To Read To Laugh To Drink

Join us on the last Monday of the month in Islington for drinking, eating, and fun, lively book discussions with a friendly group of adults from all walks of life. Running continuously since 2008, we supplement our usual meetings with a variety of social activities, including an annual literary-themed pub crawl.

Who we are

Running strong since 2008, Islington Book Club is currently led by Rich P, Sam B, Helen M, Susan B, and Sam V. Our members are adults of all ages and backgrounds—whether you're based in North London or coming from further afield, you'll fit right in!

Beyond our monthly book chats, we host year-round socials, including a Christmas dinner, a summer outing, and our famous literary-themed pub crawl.

Membership & joining

We are strictly not-for-profit. A nominal £8 annual subscription covers our website hosting and annual prizes, keeping all regular meetings completely free for active members.

PayPal — send £8 to rsvpickup@hotmail.com with the reference ‘Book Club Subs’.

Bank transfer — no PayPal? Just reach out to Rich for his details.

The diary is for members

Meeting dates, addresses and who is coming are behind a sign-in. Members get their own account, so replies show up under your name.

Pick your own password. An organiser approves the account before you can see the diary — usually the same day.

Forgotten your password?

We'll email you a link to set a new one. It works once, and only for the next hour.

What to expect

One book a month, discussed on the last Monday. Nobody is quizzed and nobody is shamed for skimming. Beyond the books there's a Christmas dinner, a summer outing, and the literary-themed pub crawl.

The club server did not answer, so this is a preview with sample content. Signing in works on the deployed site.

Housekeeping

This part is for organisers

You are signed in as {{ myName }}, which gets you the diary and the RSVP lists but not the editing. Ask an organiser if you should have it.

Once a meeting has happened, press Mark as happened — it moves down to Past events with its book, cover and notes intact, and that is what the shelf and the home-page covers are built from.

Past events

Every meeting that has happened — this is the shelf on the Events page and the covers on the home page. Add an older one at the top; edits below save when you leave a field. Listed most recently added first, so nothing jumps about while you type; the Events page and the home page put them in date order themselves.

{{ shelfAddNote }}

The gallery

Photographs from past events. Upload several at once, then caption them. Listed most recently added first so the cards stay still while you type — each one says where it actually appears on the Gallery page.

Odds and ends

An optional Google Form for the Join page — Send → <> embed → copy the src address only. Leave it empty and the Join page invites people to make an account instead. The hero image sits behind the title on the home page.

Tell us when someone asks to join

Email addresses to notify, separated by commas — the organisers who approve people. An email goes out the moment somebody signs up, with a link to this page. It needs the one-off mail setup in SETUP.md; until that is done these addresses sit idle and nothing is sent.
